Soccer Watch Party[1]
Day/Time of Event: June 29, 2026 / 0012 EST
Location: San Pedro Square, San Jose, California, US
Fixture: None
Suspected Threat: Lone actor attack
Status: Under Investigation
Summary: An unknown attacker killed one person and injured another in a gun shooting in a World Cup fan zone in San José.[2] The San José Police Department (SJPD) considers the incident an isolated event, which remains under investigation.[3] Law enforcement has not arrested the suspect yet.[4]
Threat vectors:
Fan treatment
Fan violence
Violence between supporters
Weapon incidents
Stampedes
CTG is on HIGH alert for the potential increase of lone actor violence around public World Cup watch parties at preeminent venues such as San Jose, New York City, and Boston. Attackers will likely target scheduled watch parties at public parks and bars in San Jose, likely during future World Cup matches hosted in the Bay Area. Perpetrators will very likely use firearms, very likely attempting to escape the scene on foot after the attack. There is a roughly even chance that the SJDP and US local law enforcement at World Cup host cities will not have enough manpower to stop the widespread nature of future lone actor actions, likely resulting in some future attackers escaping security forces after inciting violence.
Who will it directly impact:
Local residents near the Stadium
Residents near the fan zones
Local Law Enforcement
Supporters gathering in watch parties/fan zones
Local businesses
Passersby
Significance: Analysis indicates that there is a HIGH PROBABILITY that lone actors will exploit the World Cup euphoria to commit opportunistic crimes or copycat actions, with a roughly even chance of overwhelming law enforcement investigations. Lone actors will likely carry out attacks against supporters in fan zones, with a roughly even chance of waiting until the matches conclude to take advantage of decreased law enforcement presence. Psychological distress linked to perceived insecurity will very likely lead to hypervigilance and potential crowd panic during the following watch parties, very likely primarily affecting tourists unaware of active shooter response measures and alien to the venues. Some supporters’ subsequent fear of crowded areas will likely impact local businesses' expected influx of revenue during watch parties, with a roughly even chance of arousing questioning about law enforcement and local government security measures.
